Wonders of the Autistic Mind 

Jason Shields was born with mild cerebral palsy and recently diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome, a mild form autism. In his new workshop, “Wonders of the Autistic Mind” Jason recounts his story of growing up with a disability and Asperger's, a relatively mild and high-functioning form of autism. Jason debunks many of the myths and stereotypes associated with disabilities and autism and takes participants on a journey of exploration into the mind of several autistic men and women, including his own. Autism is often referred to as a spectrum disorder because of many of the varying degrees of conditions that are associated with the condition. Scientists have recognized the sheer diversity within the autistic experience: from the silent, rocking child to the brilliant, socially awkward scientist. We now know that there are as many forms of autism as there are individuals with the condition.

What You Will Experience  

Though Jason exhibited many of the most common traits of autism in childhood – social isolation, anxiety, depression, and communication problems – as an adult, he has lead a successful, happy and independent life with a career, relationship, and numerous friends and intellectual pursuits. Jason now works independently as a consultant for Fortune 500 companies, a counselor and a motivational speaker on behalf of persons with autism and disabilities. Adults and children with autism perceive the world in an incredibly unique way that is quite different from the average person. They also tend to possess extraordinary abilities such as photographic memories, above average computational skills, artistic ability, etc. Participants in Jason's workshop will experience firsthand how their own minds can perform incredible feats such as memorizing an entire deck of random playing cards in less than a half hour as well as multiplying large 3 digit numbers using only the power of the brain in just seconds. After spending an afternoon with Jason, you will never see your life the same way.

Jason relies solely on the generosity of love offerings during his travels on his motivational speaking tour. Suggested love offering per person is $30-$40. Hosts usually have been generous to supply funding for Jason's traveling expenses in addition to the love offerings.
